At Ringway Primary School we understand that music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. Therefore, we strive to provide an ambitious, high-quality music education that both engages and inspires pupils to develop an appreciation, and love, of broad genres of music as well as embrace their talent as musicians. This, in turn, will aid in increasing their self-confidence, creativity, independence and collaborative skills as well as provide a sense of achievement.
Our music curriculum utilises several aspects of the award-winning Charanga scheme, to ensure that it is progressive and enables all children to develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and listen with discrimination, to some of the finest works in a broad range of musical genres. Music lessons are planned to ensure that children are presented with the opportunity to: learn to sing and use their voices, to create music both independently and as part of a collaborative group, have the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument and use technology effectively so that they can further progress their musical skills. In addition, children are able to explore the various different ways in which music is created, produced, communicated and interpreted. This links to the study of influential musicians both past and present to provide an understanding of how music has both changed throughout history as well as the discrete teaching of combing sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music progressing to the use and understanding of staff and other musical notations.
We work closely with Music Partnership North to help ensure a high-quality music curriculum is provided for all children and opportunities for children to further their musical education through participation in sessions lead by a specialist music teacher – with Mrs Chinery delivering expert music tuition Year 3 – and the option to join an after-school mini band with future opportunities to play in front of an audience at live events.
